Soft magnetic alloys are magnetic alloys that are readily magnetized under an external field and essentially lose their magnetic induction once the field is removed. The term "soft" refers to how easily these materials magnetize. The family includes low-carbon electrical steel and Armco iron, silicon steel, nickel-iron soft magnetic alloys, iron-cobalt soft magnetic alloys and sendust (Fe-Si-Al) alloys.

Thanks to their ease of magnetization and demagnetization and their very high permeability, soft magnetic alloys concentrate magnetic flux lines effectively and are therefore widely used as flux-carrying, magnetically conductive materials.
